Kent Junior Stoddard

Kent Junior Stoddard passed away on July 18, 2026 at the age of 94. He was born on August 31, 1931, in Cardson, Alberta, Canada, the 6th of 7 children born of Douglas and Vera Stoddard. He was always happy to tell others that he had a twin sister, Kay, and also twin sisters (Maxine and Marg), and that his mother was very efficient – giving birth 5 times but had 7 children.

His childhood and early adult life were spent in the Cardston area. After graduating from Cardston High School, he attended Montana School of Mines in Butte, Montana, graduating in 1953 with a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering. While attending school in Butte, he lived in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stew Stadler and worked as their live-in helper. He babysat, washed floors, did dishes and odd jobs for which he received his room and board for 3 years. They also paid him $40 per month and allowed him to use the family car. He met the Hanna family while attending The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, became good friends with their son Wray, and eventually fell in love with their lovely redheaded daughter Joyce. They were married in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on October 15, 1953, 3 days before Joyce’s 18th birthday.

In his profession as a Petroleum Engineer, he was employed by Canadian Montana Gas Company in southern Alberta and lived in a camp owned by the company in Pendant d’Oreille, Central Del Rio Oils in Weyburn Saskatchewan and Calgary Alberta, finishing his career with Grant Trimble Engineering in Calgary

He enjoyed many hobbies such as snow skiing, water skiing, playing squash and racquetball and bike riding. He loved to hike, ride horseback, swim, camp, canoe, fish and garden. He learned to tie fishing lures, and enjoyed carpentry, making furniture for his home and family. Always anxious to learn new things to help others, he studied to be on a ski patrol, learned Morse Code and even tried his hand at brick laying (fireplace and hearth and chimney for his Calgary home and helped erect brick walls for the Glenmore Chapel in Calgary Alberta). He took classes at the local university to learn several computer languages and wrote many useful programs for family, work and community.

As a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints he served wherever he was called. Among his many callings he was a ward clerk, bishop, high councilman, and member of the Calgary Alberta Stake presidency. Together, he and Joyce served three 18-month senior missions - in Winnipeg Manitoba, London England, Salt Lake City UT, and a two-week mission at the pageant in Palmyra NY.

He served as manager of the Family History Center in Calgary Alberta, and was a Temple ordinance worker in the Cardston, Calgary, Tucson and London Temples, a faithful Home Teacher (Ministering Brother), and Ward Missionary.

He is survived by his wife Joyce, 4 daughters, Sondra (Greg) Southers, Nancy (Reid) Bullock, Collette (Rod) Buffaloe, Rozann (Greg)Johnson and son Gary (Lisa) Stoddard and his twin sister Kay (George – deceased) Nay, along with 15 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Doug and Vera Stoddard, his in-laws Charlie and Eleanor Hanna, and siblings, Dale (Dorothy) Stoddard, Maxine (Doug) Sherwood, Marge (Jim) Ady, Yvonna (Fred) French and Leon Stoddard.

His daughter, Collette, wrote these words:

He served as Bishop, High Counselor, Stake Presidency Counselor, Home Teacher, and Missionary. And all he served loved him deeply because he loved THEM deeply. And now we know he has gone on to continue the work on the other side of the veil. Oh, how I would have loved to have been there to witness the joyous reunion as he arrived (with) all those who I know were there to greet him. Most of all - I know there was the well-deserved "Well done, my GOOD and FAITHFUL servant from our Savior Jesus Christ.
