Benito Castillo Gutierrez

March 21, 1944 — February 4, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Benito “Benny” Castillo Gutierrez (3/21/44 - 2/04/25).

Born in Harlingen, TX, Benny first arrived in Chico in 1961 to harvest almonds. He eventually got a job at Holly Sugar in Hamilton City, where he advanced through the company to become the first Mexican-American Warehouse Manager. His impact on the community and workplace remains an enduring legacy.

In 1969, Benny answered the call to serve in the Army, deploying to Vietnam as a door gunner and crew chief. His bravery earned him a Presidential Unit Commendation, two Purple Hearts, and numerous accolades, reflecting his courage and commitment.

Benny was a true hero, both on and off the battlefield.

He is survived by his loving children, Benny Jr. and Amanda.

We invite you to join us for an open casket viewing on Wednesday February 19th from 5-8 PM at Brusie Funeral Home in downtown Chico.  A Mass will be held the following morning at 10 AM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Let us come together to honor a life well-lived .
