John Peter Mykytka
Jul 30, 1946 — Apr 18, 2026
John P. Mykytka, age 79, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2026. He was born on July 30, 1946, in Miami, Florida, to the late John and Eleanore (Dubeck) Mykytka. John graduated from Christopher Columbus High School and went on to attend Loyola University in New Orleans. He later earned his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Florida, a lifelong achievement that reflected both his intellect and dedication. A proud Gator fan, John never missed an opportunity to give his Tennessee friends a hard time. Following his education, John moved to Kingsport, Tennessee, where he built a distinguished career with Eastman Chemical Company. Over the years, he served in various roles as a research chemist and contributed to multiple processes that led to patents, leaving a lasting mark in his field.
Outside of his professional accomplishments, John found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved working in his yard, spending time in the pool, and coaching his daughters’ soccer teams. He was a devoted supporter of Dobyns-Bennett High School athletics and an active member of his community, forming lasting friendships through Kingsport youth soccer leagues, DB sports, his church, and his workplace. John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Deborah (Whited) Mykytka; his four daughters, Tanya Cox and husband Chris, Brook Pyhtila and husband John, Liz Jones and husband David, and Katherine Woods and husband Lou. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Charlie Cox, Luke Pyhtila, Ben Pyhtila, Annelise Jones, Silas Jones, Sloan Woods, and Ellis Woods, and he cherished every moment spent watching them swim, play at the beach, and compete in their many activities. He is also survived by his brother, Ed Mykytka and wife Mary Jo; his nephew, Paul Mykytka and wife Michelle; and his niece, Mary Snapp and husband Ian. John was preceded in death by his parents. John will be remembered for his intelligence, his steady presence, his love of family, and his ability to bring humor into everyday moments.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Asbury Baysmont House and Gentiva Hospice for their care and support.
A memorial service will be held on April 25, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at First Broad Street United Methodist Church, with a time of receiving friends to follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Broad Street United Methodist Church Bays Mountain Scholarship Fund. John’s legacy of love, dedication, and quiet strength will live on in all who knew him.
