William H. Armstrong

September 30, 1941 — April 17, 2026

A coach will impact more young people in a year than the average person does in a lifetime.

  William “Bill” Armstrong, age 84, of Mount Carmel, TN passed away peacefully on Friday, April 17, 2026, in his home surrounded by family. Bill was born in Knox County, TN on September 30, 1941, to Pat and Margaret Armstrong. After graduating high school, Bill received a basketball scholarship to the University of Tennessee and later achieved his master's degree in education from ETSU. His passion was serving underprivileged children and children with special needs. Bill loved coaching basketball, playing golf, and supporting all UT sports.  He was a veteran serving our country in the Navy. Bill was a devoted member of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Gate City, VA. He was a loving grandfather who mentored and supported his grandchildren in all of their endeavors. Bill was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and will be missed by all who knew him. 

  In addition to his parents, Bill is preceded in death by his sisters Ann McGuire, Kay Armstrong, and Patsy Vandergriff; and brother Mike Armstrong. 

  Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years Betsy Armstrong; children Ginny (Stephen) Hicks, Jon (Leah) Armstrong, and Jason (Tonia) Armstrong; grandchildren Jacob (fiancé Leah) Armstrong, Tyler (fiancé Sarah) Armstrong, Gavin (Allison) McClellan, Tucker (Brenda) Armstrong, Emily (fiancé Cameron) Armstrong, Tanner Armstrong, and Zachary Armstrong; great-granddaughter Rory Hill; as well as several nieces and nephews. 

  In accordance with his wishes, there will be no formal services; a service for the family will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to the children’s charity of your choice.
