Dewey Eugene Hensley
September 8, 1937 — May 23, 2026
Dewey Eugene Hensley, age 88, of Yuma, Virginia, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born on September 8, 1937, Dewey lived a life marked by hard work, devotion to family, and a talent for fixing just about anything.
Dewey proudly served his country in the United States Army and spent time stationed in Germany during his service. He worked as a school bus driver for the Scott County School System before his retirement in 1999.
He was known for his love of tinkering and could often be found working on just about anything. Dewey enjoyed staying busy and was happiest when he was fixing something for someone he loved.
Above all else, Dewey’s greatest love was his wife, Shelby. The two shared a deep bond built on love, devotion, and years of memories together. Even after her passing, she remained in his heart every single day. There is comfort in knowing that after almost 11 years apart, Dewey is now reunited with the love of his life once again.
Dewey will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, quiet strength, and the love he showed to his family throughout his life.
Dewey was preceded in death by his loving wife, Shelby Hensley; daughter, Debra Hensley; parents, W.M. and Rhoda Hensley; mother-in-law, Mary Crawford; brothers, Clarence and Herbert Hensley; sisters, Beatrice Winegar, Mary Ruth Lane, Alice Hensley, and Jean Hensley.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Brenda Tipton and husband Larry, Freda Fansler; grandchildren, Adam Tipton (Rachel), Mindy Frazier and husband Blake, Josh Fansler and wife Whitney, Whitney Tipton (Matt); great grandchildren, Hunter Hendrickson, Irelynn Frazier, and Laramie Fansler; brother, Worley Hensley and wife Linda; sisters, Shirley Jenkins, Mildred Pierson and husband Bobby Joe, Ella Mae Williams and husband Paul, and Margaret Thacker; sister–in-law, Janie Hensley; brother-in-law, Johnny Thacker; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5pm to 7pm on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at Scott County Funeral home. A funeral service will follow with Pastor Samuel Newland officiating.
A military graveside service will be conducted at 1pm on Friday May 29, 2026, at Holston View Cemetery with honors conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post #3/265. Pallbearers will be Josh Fansler, Adam Tipton, Blake Frazier, Hunter Hendrickson, Jeff Thacker, and Wesley Osborne. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home by 12:30pm to go in procession to the cemetery.
