DUFFIELD – With his loving wife by his side, Michael Allen Carter, 70,
went to heaven in the arms of Jesus on Sunday, May 10, 2026. He was a loving husband, son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend. Michael was born and raised in Duffield and spent his entire life on his beloved Carter family farm. He worked for 43 years with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), supervising many areas in Scott County over the years.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary Adams Carter; step-mother Betty Carter; step-brother Eddie (Beth) Taylor; step-sister Lisa (Dennis) Dockery; two uncles, Bill (Brenda) Bobrosky and Mack (Cora) Bobrosky; mother-in-law Lois Adams, two sisters-in-law Freda (Clarence) Robinette and Vada (Jeff) Beverly; one niece Crystal (Ronald) Dishner; two nephews, Chris Robinette, and Ross Beverly; grand-nephew, Jacob (Abby) Dishner and grand-niece Anna Dishner; and great grand-nephew Leland Dishner; god-daughter Anna Bright; special friend Taylor Proctor; lifelong friends John Wade and Russell Proctor, who Michael thought of as brothers, and Steve Holmes and Zach Dorton, who Michael thought of as sons; several cousins, and many special friends, including his four legged buddies.
Michael always loved the many days he spent on the family farm, tending to his cattle, horses, and land. He was a huge NASCAR fan, especially of his favorite all time driver, Bobby Allison. He enjoyed attending many races across the Southeast with family and friends over the years, and was especially fond of the tracks at Coeburn and Kingsport. He also was a huge fan of the Virginia Tech Hokies. Michael was heavily involved in the annual Duffield Daze celebration, helping coordinate and plan for many years. His family and friends always enjoyed his storytelling, especially of his knowledge of NASCAR and his many racing trip experiences.
Per his wishes, a graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, May 15th, at the McKinney-Carter cemetery located at 1481 Fraleytown Road, Duffield, VA with Pastor David Salley officiating.
