Carol M. Phelps

Of Waukesha died peacefully in her sleep at Avalon Square on Sunday, June 19, 2016 at the age of 98, surrounded by her family. She was born in Racine, WI, the daughter of Claude and Irma Austin. Carol married the love of her life, Willard T. Phelps on November 6, 1943. They owned and operated the Phelps Monument Company for over 33 years. Carol lived a life spent caring for and nurturing her husband, six children, 11 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.
She was a quiet supporter of many organizations including First United Methodist Church of Waukesha, WI; Food Pantry of Waukesha County; and Hebron House. Her contributions to these organizations were done faithfully behind the scenes and often anonymously. She was known to make delicious cookies and candies, happily shared with her family and friends.
Carol is lovingly survived by her six children: Tom (Shirley)Phelps of West Allis, WI; Ellen Colby of Atlanta, GA; Mary (Gary) Toth of West Allis, WI; David (Lee Ann)Phelps of Portland, OR; Barbara Thode of Sheboygan, WI; and William (Lara) Phelps of Milwaukee WI. She is also survived by a sister, Norma Jean Austin of Racine, WI. Carol was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Willard Phelps, and by her two sisters Muriel Austin and Mary Austin Haas.
Family members will be greeting friends and loved ones for a gathering on Sunday, June 26, 2016 at First United Methodist Church of Waukesha, 121 Wisconsin Avenue, Waukesha, WI, 53186 between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. A private memorial service honoring Carol's life will be planned at a later date.
