John "Jack" Alexander Wagner

Lexington, Kentucky John A. Wagner "Jack", 80, beloved husband of Barbara Ann Hunter, died Wednesday, April 2, 2014. He was born in Pittsburg, PA, son of the late John and Margaret Irwin Wagner. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Jeanie and Florence "Sissy" and his son, Jackie. In addition to his wife of 34 years, he is survived by his daughter, Diana Wagner (Bryan) Barrett and grandson, Jackson Hunter Barrett "his little buddy", all of Texas; a daughter, Dorothy M. Schneider, and her sons, Brian and Jonathan, of Pennsylvania. After high school Jack worked in the steel mills of Pittsburg and Ohio while attending college at night and often working a second job as a taxi driver. He foresaw the end of the steel industry and moved to Kentucky, eventually coming to Nicholasville to help start up the Gulf States Paper Plant (Rock-Tenn Company). Moving to Lexington in the 70's he worked at Sayre School and then became Director of Purchasing at the Lexington Fayette Urban Co. Gov't. He retired there as Assistant Commissioner of Finance in 1995. Jack loved sports. He was a Wildcat fan but his first love was Pittsburg Steeler football. He watched his Cats and Steelers in his recliner with his dog, Toby, in his lap. He played football, basketball, competed in 10k races, drove in stock car races and hiked many of the trails in the Great Smoky Mt. National Park. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, a loyal friend and a fierce competitor. Funeral Information We are inviting family and friends to Clark Legacy Center, Brannon Crossing for supper and a celebration of Jack's life from 5:30pm-8:00pm, Wednesday, April 9, 2014. The family would like to thank Jack's pals at Best Friends and his favorite caregiver, Stephanie Walden, for making his difficult journey easier.
