William Calvert “Bill” Prewitt, 79, of Lexington passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2026 while under hospice care at Morning Point Senior Living of Lexington East. He was born to the late Henry Calvert Prewitt and Jewell Cummings Prewitt on October 22, 1946 in Danville, Kentucky.
Bill was a graduate of Burgin High School, Class of 1964. He furthered his education at Eastern Kentucky University, from which he earned a B.A. and rank 1 on August 7, 1969 and an M.A. in education on May 13, 1973. He taught at Bryan Station Middle and High Schools from 1971 until his retirement on January 1, 1997. He treasured his students, who affectionately called him Mr. Bill. He also worked at Keeneland Paramutuals from April 2, 1999 to January 1, 2014.
Governor Julian Carroll designated Bill a Kentucky Colonel on May 14, 1976.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in passing by his sister Nancy Mayes.
Following Bill’s wishes, no services will be held.
In memory of Bill, who was a great cat lover, donations are encouraged to the Lexington Humane Society ( https://lexingtonhumanesociety.org/donate/ ). One of Bill’s dear cats was named Forrest.
