Mar 21, 1977 — May 2, 2026

Bruce Valentine Whitman, born on March 21, 1977, in Madras, Oregon, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2026, in Portland, Oregon. He was a man whose life was marked by creativity, humor, and a deep love for nature.

From an early age, Bruce was an entertaining and caring child, known for marching to the beat of his own drum. His imaginative spirit was vividly demonstrated in childhood when he built a full castle with a moat and bailey, showcasing a blend of ingenuity and playfulness. Graduating from Baker High School in 1995, Bruce carried with him a unique creativity and a keen sense of humor that continued to define his life.

Bruce's passion for the outdoors and nature was a constant throughout his years. He was an amateur beekeeper, a rare talent perhaps evidenced by the fact that bees seemed drawn to him, returning each year without his needing to collect or cultivate them. This gentle connection to nature complemented his adventurous and lively spirit.

Professionally, Bruce was a gifted cook and chef with the remarkable ability to prepare almost anything, a skill that brought joy to many. His career took him to the seas, where he served as a maître d’ and banquet captain with Norwegian Cruise Lines, blending his culinary expertise with a warm, welcoming presence.

Known for his love of laughter and practical jokes, Bruce had an infectious ability to lighten any moment. One of his most memorable antics was releasing pink-dyed chickens in a public park — a playful stunt he replicated shortly before his passing, ensuring he left behind moments of joy and laughter even in difficult times.

Bruce’s loving family survives him, including his mother, Rita Lenzer; his step-father, Robert Lenzer; his brothers, Jason Erickson and Cody Erickson; his grandfather, Donald Whitman; and Caree King. He was predeceased by his dear sister, Sara Erickson, as well as his grandparents.

Bruce Valentine Whitman will be remembered not only for his talents and humor but also for the warmth, creativity, and kindness he brought to those around him. His life, touched by both adventure and affection, leaves a lasting imprint on all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
