Daniel Theodore Flores

Daniel Theodore Flores was born March 28, 1925, Chicago, Illinois, to Thomas and Maria Cudeiro Flores, immigrants from Spain. The family moved to the Manhattan borough of New York City in 1931, when Dan was six years old. He shared many fond memories of his time growing up in that ethnically rich neighborhood of first generation Americans. One of his favorite pastimes was pitching for the New York City Boys Club baseball team. When the New York Yankees recruiter came calling however, Dan had already enlisted, at age 17, with the United States Marine Corps. He served in the Pacific Theater for 31 months, earning a battle star. After World War II, Dan attended University of Iowa (B.A., History, 1950) and had begun law school when he was called to active duty (Korean Conflict) as a ROTC 2nd Lieutenant, serving as a platoon leader in the C Company 35th Infantry Regiment 25th Division. It was for this service that Dan earned two battle stars and the Combat Infantry Badge. Thereafter, Dan completed law school at University of Iowa (J.D., 1955) and began his legal career at the Iowa Highway Commission, facilitating the origin and building of Iowa’s interstate highway system. He entered private practice as an associate partner with Zene White in Storm Lake, Iowa. During this time Dan continued in the Army Reserves, eventually completing his service as a colonel. In 1984, Dan retired from the law firm of Flores and Havens, and moved to Oregon. He made his home in the Portland suburb town of Milwaukie. Then, as an adjunct professor, Dan shared his legal knowledge and experience with the students at Marylhurst University. As a lifelong Lutheran, the fellowship of the Milwaukie Lutheran Church was especially treasured by Dan. Dan is survived by his wife of 32 years, Marlena McKee-Flores; his children, Ted Flores (Sue), Nanette Robuck, and Jean Dennis; five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, as well as his step-daughter, Monica Beck. He was predeceased by his only sibling, Thomas Flores, Jr., and his sons-in-law, JD Dennis and Tony Robuck. A memorial service with military honors will be held at Milwaukie Lutheran Church, 3810 S.E. Lake Road, Milwaukie, Oregon, on Saturday, March 14, 2020, at 11:00 a.m. A music prelude of Dan’s many favorites will begin at 10:45 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Milwaukie Lutheran Church—Emergency Relief Fund or Back Pack Buddies.
