On Thursday, January 23, 2020, Martin Ray Schartau, loving husband and father passed away unexpectedly at the age of 59 from heart complications. Martin “Marty” was born on February 23, 1960 in Pomona California. He attended Bonita High School in La Verne California where he played on the varsity football team. He graduated in 1978. Following in his father’s footsteps, Marty became a police officer in Southern California. He served as a Los Angeles Airport Police Officer at LAX for 35 years and officially retired in 2018. In 1993, Marty married his wife Shelly. They raised 3 kids in Claremont California. Marty loved vacationing with his family, especially on the Oregon Coast. His family loved Oregon so much that they moved to Portland Oregon in 2015. Marty’s favorite pastime was watching football and cheering for his beloved team, The San Francisco 49rs! He was so happy that they made it to the Super Bowl this year. His favorite thing to yell across the house, was “TOUCHDOWN, 49rs!!!!” when they scored. Marty was known for his outgoing personality, his elaborate stories, and his gift of gab! If he was in the room, you would definitely know it! Marty had an immense love for animals and enjoyed his dogs, Tux, Roxy, Murphy, and his granddog, Cooper. Marty was preceded in death by his father Raymond, mother Linda, and his nephews Tyler and Ryan. Martin is survived by his wife Shelly, three children, Austin, Katy, and Cameron, two grandsons, Saul and Ezekiel, sister Christine and her husband Gregory, brother Eric, nephew Thomas, nieces, Amanda, Danielle, Amy, Alyssa and her husband Thomas, mother-in-law, Sandy, and sister-in-laws, Tammy and Wendy. A beautiful and intimate graveside service was held on Monday, February 3rd, 2020 at Restlawn Memory Gardens & Mausoleum in Salem Oregon.
