Helen “Jane” Feldmann nee “Pharr,” a long-time resident of Venice, died at home on August 15, 2022. Jane was a graduate of the University of Texas, where she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority. She also received a graduate degree in library science from Florida State University. Jane was head of the Art, Music, & Theater Department of the Memphis Public Library. Returning to Florida, Jane worked in the Sarasota County Public School system as a librarian. She loved living in Venice and telling stories. Her father’s career gave her those stories. Her father, Col. Milton Marion Pharr, USA, was appointed Deputy Commander of Upper Austria after World War II. His family was quartered in the original home of the aristocratic Captain von Trapp, featured in “The Sound of Music.” The movie was filmed at a different, and more opulent, location than the fine Saltzburg house. The Pharr family received a private showing of the Lippizaner horses. As a young teen, Jane was taught to ski in the Austrian Alps by an older teenager son of the Saltzburg nobility. All nobility were officially untitled after World War I. But the formerly noble Saltzburg Count Saint-Julien-Wallsee’s family unofficially retained their status. Also, they still lived within a striking 900-year-old cliff-top fortress, Hohensalzburg Castle. Jane mastered German, French, Spanish, Latin, and English as a result of attending high school in Austria. Jane is survived by her brother, Michael Pharr, a retired executive with a Fortune 100 company. She is also survived by her sons, Scott, a Partner in a national law firm, and Robert, a retired anesthesiologist. Jane is survived by five grandchildren: Justin, Spencer, Matthew, Lauren, and Julia Feldmann. A graveside service will be held at 10:00AM on Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at Jesse Knight Cemetery in Nokomis. Farley Funeral Home in Venice is handling the arrangements. A message of condolence may be sent by visiting www.farleyfuneralhome.com.
