Lena Calcara, age 84, of North Port, passed away on March 16, 2014. She was born in Brooklyn, NY and moved to North Port from New Fairfield, CT 34 years ago. She formerly worked as an aid at Glenallen Elementary School. Lena was a member of the San Pedro Catholic Church in North Port and their Rosary Bead Club. She was known for her traditional Italian cooking, especially pizzelles, as well as baking pineapple upside-down cake. Lena enjoyed plants, especially Orchids and gardening as well as singing and dancing, she was always laughing and having a good time. She was a slot machine enthusiast, and would also play solitaire for hours. Lena was a member of the Pinochle Club at the Jockey Club in North Port. Lena is pre deceased by her loving husband Matteo, and her son Peter Calcara (Suzanne). She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Sauro and sons Michael and Matthew Calcara all of North Port. Her grandchildren Angela Davis (Ben) of Bradenton, Karen Lisa Schlaeg (Eric) of Loudonville, NY. Michael and Brendan Calcara, Danielle and Peter Calcara, all of Long Island. Nicole Tarleton-Calcara of North Port; great grandchildren Eric Matteo and Samuel Quin Schlaeg; sister n laws Lena Ingrassia and Anna Tutrone. Also, many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation will be at Farley Funeral Home, North Port Chapel, on Wednesday, March 19th from 1-3, 6-8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at San Pedro Catholic Church on Thursday, March 20th, at 9:30am. Burial will follow at Gulf Pines Memorial Park in Englewood. Memorial donations may be made in Lena's name to the COPD Foundation or Tidewell Hospice.
