"Belchertown, Michael J. McCarthy, 66, died June 25th, following a brief illness. Born in Battle Creek, MI, he was the eldest son of the late David and Wynifred (Porter) McCarthy. Michael graduated from Michigan State and spent most of his career in Human Services until opening his own business in 1999. Always a train enthusiast, for the past 4 summers he enjoyed his “retirement job” as a tram driver at Six Flags. He will be deeply missed by his wife Ellie (Austin) McCarthy, his 2 children, Meghan Overgaard and her husband Scott of Chicopee and Tim McCarthy of Cape Cod, his granddaughter and light of his life Abigail Overgaard along with his siblings, Catherine McCarthy Walczak and her husband Tom, of Norfolk, MA, John McCarthy and his wife Linda of Ware, MA and Jean McCarthy of Webster, MA. His in-laws, Rosemary Austin, Christine Bengle, Joanne (John) Murphy, Beth (Mike) Helmer, Sean (Rebecca) Austin, Winnie (Reg) Kowalik and Patrick Austin, as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces & grandnephews also survive him. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Richard McCarthy. A Celebration of Michael's life will be on Saturday, July1st at 10:30 a.m. at Beers & Story Belchertown Funeral Home, 10 Maple St. Calling hours will be on Friday from 4 to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Richard C McCarthy Memorial Basketball League, West Springfield Park & Rec Dept. 26 Central St Suite 19, West Springfield, MA 01089.
