Lurlene Walker Todd of Fairfax, Va. and formerly of Bedford and Roanoke, Va., having completed God’s plan for her on earth was called home to be with Him, Wednesday, June 24, 2015. She left behind all her pain and suffering, dying peacefully in the loving arms of her daughter, Deborah Todd, at the Little Sisters of the Poor nursing home and sanctuary in Washington, D.C. Mama Todd, 99 years-old was born to William Walker and Iva Wright Walker of Bedford County, Va. in 1916. She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her husband, David Todd, and her brothers and sisters: William Walker, Mildred Walker Tooley, Laura Walker Capps, and Richard Walker. Left to cherish her memory is her sister, Margaret Walker Johnson, as well as her two daughters: Deborah Jane Todd and Linda Todd White, and her son, Buford Overstreet. She is also survived by grandchildren: Katherian Dale Lyndsay, Steven Overstreet , Leslie Bowyer, and Allison McKell; and great-grandchildren: Christopher Overstreet, Tyler Overstreet, Elisabeth Overstreet, Grafton Padgett, Catheryn Padgett, and Teagan McKell; in addition to many friends and former students of hers. Mama Todd grew up and was educated in Bedford County, Va. While in high school, she won a statewide Latin contest, of which she was quite proud. After high school, she obtained a bachelor’s degree from James Madison University and a master’s degree in Latin from the University of Virginia. She taught Latin in schools in Bedford and Roanoke Counties, including Cave Spring High School, for over 30 years and retired from teaching in the 1980’s. She lived independently in Roanoke County before relocating to Fairfax County to live with her daughter, Deborah. Only in the last months did she require nursing home assistance. Her funeral arrangements will be carried out according to her written instructions. A memorial service will be held in Roanoke, Va. in mid-August. The time and location of which will be announced later. A private burial will take place. Mama Todd left her mark on many lives, always guided by her values, which placed love, education, and God above all else. In lieu of flowers, the surviving family requests donations in her loving memory to be made to her church family in Northern Virginia: Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, 6477 Lincolnia Road, Alexandria, Va. 22312.
