On Saturday, May 2, 2015, Edith Black, of Falls Church, Virginia passed away peacefully at her residence in Goodwin House – Baileys Cross Roads. Edith was born July 15, 1923 at the old Sibley Hospital in downtown Washington, D.C. and was raised in Takoma Park, Maryland. Edith was the daughter of Julia Fields Peacock and was the third of five siblings. After graduating from high school, she worked in the Office of Emergency Management before the beginning of World War II. Later on, she worked for the State Department in the Diplomatic Visa Division as a typist. On May 6th, 1946, Edith married M. Alan Black and was a homemaker and devoted wife to her husband and mother to their three sons, Brian, Gary and Bruce. Years later, when the children were older, she devoted her time to do volunteer office work for the Child Development Center in Falls Church, Virginia and was later asked to become the school and medical secretary from 1970 to 1982. From 1982 to 1984, she worked in the office with her husband at Hodges Home Insulation. In 1986, her husband, Alan, was diagnosed with cancer and she lovingly cared for him until he died in May of 1989. After her husband’s death, she worked several part time jobs until 2007. Edith loved crafts which included quilting, basket weaving, Japanese flower arranging and Japanese Sumi painting. In 1965, she spent time in Japan studying flower arranging and painting. She also was involved in the schools her children attended. She was the editor of her children’s school newspapers; the Country Club Hills School newspaper and the Woodlawn Elementary School “Woodlawn Whispers.” She would type and cut stencils and then run copies on a mimeograph machine in her kitchen. Edith is survived by her three children, Brian Black of Woodbridge, Virginia; Gary Black of Oakton, Virginia and Bruce Black of Hillsboro, Virginia. Also surviving is her grandson, Bruce Duncan Black. A celebration of Edith’s life will be held in the chapel at Goodwin House – Baileys Cross Roads, 3440 S. Jefferson St., Falls Church, Virginia 22041, on Thursday, May 14, 2015 @ 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Edith’s name to the Goodwin House Foundation, 4800 Fillmore Ave., Alexandria, Virginia 22311. (703) 824-1000.
