WILLIAM “BILL” M. EGAN of McLean, VA passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 13, 2015, surrounded by family and loved ones. He was 77 years old. Born in New York City, NY, February 3, 1938, and raised in the Bronx, NY, Bill graduated from Saint Helena High School and received his Bachelor’s degree from Pace University of New York. Bill then entered the US Marine Corps Reserves for five years. After he was honorably discharged, he joined the Peace Corps for two years. During that time he had a Presidential recognition for his projects and efforts in Chile, which led him to join the Foreign Service with US Agency for International Development. As a Foreign Service Officer Bill served his country with distinguish merit for 31 years in Vietnam, Nigeria, Chad, Burundi, Tunisia, Senegal, and Peru. After an accomplished life serving others, Bill retired in 1995. He loved watching rugby, Irish football, shooting at the range, and writing his memoirs. He is remembered for his sense of compassion to others, his sharp wit alongside his strong New York Irish accent, his unique sense of humor, and his distinctive smile. The network of treasured friends and family Bill leaves behind is vast. He is survived by his loving wife, Mai, his son, Liam, and his two adopted daughters, Nhat and Kim. A funeral mass will be held for Bill on Friday, April 24, 2015, 11am, at Saint John the Beloved Roman Catholic Church, 6420 Linway Terrace, McLean, VA 22101. Bill will be laid to rest, at White City Cemetery, Fort Pierce, FL, at a later date. Condolences sent in the form of flowers to the church for the mass are welcomed, however donations to Bill’s favorite charities in his name would be most appreciated. Those charities are: Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org; and, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, www.lls.org.
