"South Hadley, Janice Marie (Huey) Robertson, 83, died peacefully on August 23 at Loomis House in Holyoke with her family by her side. Her gentle and loving nature added much joy to the lives of her family and friends, as did her remarkable baking, sewing and gardening. Born on July 4, 1931 in Albany, NY to Ray and Catherine Huey, Jan grew up in upstate New York with her parents and two older brothers. When she was eight, the family moved to their farm in Aurora, on Cayuga Lake, in the Finger Lakes. After graduating first in her class at Sherwood Central High School in 1949, Jan moved to the southern tip of Cayuga Lake to attend Cornell University. Her college years at Cornell led to two degrees - a B.S. Human Ecology in 1953, followed by an M.S. Nutrition in 1954- as well as a fateful meeting with the Cornell undergraduate, Robert (Bob) L. Robertson, who was to become her husband. Jan and Bob married at Colonial Oaks, the Huey farm house, in Aurora on June 19, 1954. A year later, the couple crossed the Mississippi River for the first time, to spend a memorable summer as U.S. Forest Service lookouts in a tower in the Swan Valley of western Montana. In the fall of 1955, the pair headed to the University of Wisconsin, where Jan worked as a lab assistant in the medical school, while Bob began his doctoral studies. Seven years and two moves later, the couple had settled in South Hadley, where they raised their four children, Nancy, Doug, Kay and Laura. Jan remained active in education-related pursuits, including tutoring special needs children in the Granby schools, taking college classes, and pursuing on-going learning through her Quibus discussion group. She also developed close ties to local libraries, and until recently served as a volunteer at the Gaylord Memorial Library. Jan contributed to the local community in many additional ways. She was a president of South Hadley's Know Your Town organization, and worked diligently as a Sunday School teacher and member of several committees at Center Congregational Church (the First Congregational Church UCC of South Hadley). Jan gladly shared the fruits of her labors with others, and her iris transplants found new homes around the Northeast. A keen traveller, Jan visited all 50 of the American states and explored countries around the world, making multiple trips to South and Central America, the Caribbean, Africa and New Zealand. She was also enthusiastic about outdoor activities, including camping and hiking, and such sports as cycling, swimming, badminton, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Jan is survived by Bob, her devoted husband of 60 years, and their four children, Nancy of Indianapolis, IN, Doug and his wife Marie of Yarmouth, ME, Kay and her husband Cliff of Rangiora, New Zealand, and Laura and her husband Kurt of Brattleboro, VT; and her five grandchildren: Ian, Liana, Gina, Bryce and Mead. She is predeceased by her brother Charles Huey, and leaves her brother Robert Huey, of Gainesville, FL, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, August 30 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral Home, 646 Newton St. A Memorial Service will be held on October 4 at 11:00 am at Center Congregational Church. Jan will be buried privately at Evergreen Cemetery in South Hadley. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Jan's memory may be made to Gaylord Memorial Library (South Hadley) or Providence Ministries (Holyoke)."
