Daniel Schlagel, 83, passed away July 29, 2018 at his home in Loveland, CO. Dan was born on May 15, 1935 in Longmont, CO to Jacob and Hulda Schlagel. He was one of 17 siblings. At the age of 19, he joined the United States Marine Corp, where he proudly served for 4 years, having the opportunity to be stationed in Japan. After his time in the military, Dan returned home to Colorado where he would begin a 38-year career with Steele Inc and meet a young lady in the parking lot of a bowling alley that would be his wife for 57 years. At the age of 26, the previously confirmed bachelor was married on November 5, 1961 to Joyce Porter and together they raised 3 children. Dan was best known for working with his hands. He loved working hard, whether it was outside busting up concrete, building a garage, a fence, or fixing a car. He was also talented in the kitchen and enjoyed baking cookies and candy and German food that he would often share with others; and made the perfect Whiskey Sour. And although he was strong, he earned the name Dr. Dan, for his gentle touch, when he was taking out splinters of other’s hands or helping to patch up wounds. He was truly a jack of all trades. After retirement, Dan enjoyed years of traveling with his wife in the motorhome, spending hours by the fire in the desserts of Arizona and meeting new friends along the journey to Alaska. Eventually, he settled down in Loveland, CO, where he spent time working alongside his sons on their properties and hosted numerous parties for his family in the room he built with his own hands. Always smiling with a wink, Dan Schlagel will be remembered as a great husband, father, and grandfather. Dan was preceded in death by his son, Daniel Kai. Dan is survived by his wife, Jody Schlagel; his daughter, Sherry, his son Roy (Lynn), his daughter-in-law Beth, and his 7 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Viegut Funeral Home 1616 N. Lincoln Ave., Loveland, CO 80538 on Thursday August 2, 2018 at 1:00pm with luncheon following at the Viegut Reception Center. Interment will be at Ft. Logan National Cemetery on Tuesday August 7, 2018 at 12:15pm.
