Shirley Jean Powell

Shirley J Powell of Ft Collins, CO passed away at her home surrounded by family away on June 7, 2021. She is preceded in death by Jean E. Powell, (husband), June 26, 2006. Margaret Elaine Conger, (daughter) June 1, 2020. Shirley was born April 22, 1936 to Fleacie Overby Matthews and James Matthews in Selma, NC. She married the love of her life, Jean E. Powell, July 26, 1950. They were married 56 years. She was born in NC but moved to various states throughout her life. She loved to travel, raise show dogs, and loved her family. She participated in the American Kennel Club Dog Shows taking home many blue ribbons. When trying to please Shirley – it was like having the perfect match. Pepsi with hot dogs. Coke with a Milky Way. Milk with a sandwich. Or just not being in the mood to eat something. Her favorite was McDonald’s and Honey Buns. She was particular and spoilt by her late husband, Jean Powell. They grew as sweethearts, and there was nothing he would do for her. She was sassy but loved by her family. She always had a kind heart and always wanted to remember as young in heart. As she said on her 80 birthday she was quite taken by the number of people at her party and her remark to me was: all because of the love of two people. And how big the family grew! If we missed a name or forgot to mention someone, we love you just the same and are so sorry your name was not mentioned. Thank you, Felicia for taking care of Mom for the last three years and kept her from being placed in a nursing home. It was a sacrifice for you and your family. Thank you! Shirley was survived by her children Christy Wyatt (Tom), Lois Blair, Claude Carlos Powell, Felicia Hamilton (Harry) and Jean Powell (Sherri).
