Michael "Mike" Colson
September 14th, 1946 - February 2nd, 2025
Michael "Mike" Colson, a resilient and devoted family man, passed away on February 2, 2025, in Rochester, Washington. Born on September 14, 1946, in South Bend, Washington, Mike's life was marked by dedication to family, service, and a passion for craftsmanship.
From an early age, Mike exhibited a strong work ethic, a trait that he held dear throughout his life. He attended Olympia High School, but his academic pursuits were cut short when he bravely answered the call to serve his country, being drafted into the U.S. Army in July 1966. Mike served with honor during the Vietnam War before being honorably discharged in July 1968. His time in the military was a testament to his courage and commitment, qualities that he carried into civilian life.
His career as a construction worker, where he specialized in home construction and the restoration of antique cars and aircraft, was a reflection of his meticulous attention to detail and his love for building and repairing. Through hard work, Mike not only built structures but also fostered strong, lasting relationships within his community.
Married to Katherine E. (Baker) Colson on April 1, 1972, at Mayfield Lake, Mike devoted 52 years and 10 months to a loving and fulfilling marriage. Kathy stood by his side as his unwavering partner. Together, they built a home filled with love and laughter in Tumwater, Washington, where they lived for 33 years. Mike cherished every moment spent with his family, including his two daughters, Shelly Tucker of Chehalis, Washington, and Susan Colson of Rochester, Washington, as well as his 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon and Paula (Ganders) Colson, and his beloved granddaughter Sydney Anderson in February 2024.
Mike's interests were simple yet profound: hunting, fishing, and spending quality time with his family and his cherished dogs, Sergeant and Bosch, brought him immense joy. He embraced life with an unwavering spirit and was always ready to lend a helping hand, embodied in his own words: "You have 2 hands and 2 feet, get to work, you can make it."
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Raise for Rowyn, in memory of his granddaughter Sydney Anderson, supporting funeral costs for children with cancer—a cause close to Mike's heart.
Mike Colson will be remembered as a man of integrity and kindness, whose legacy of hard work and generosity will continue to inspire those who knew him. Rest in peace, Mike; your spirit lives on in the hearts of many.
