Nona Mae Looby
September 7th, 1935 - July 2nd, 2025
Nona Looby passed away peacefully on July 2, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born in Saginaw, Michigan, to Frances (Rondo) and Francis Lichon, Nona lived a life marked by devotion to her Catholic Faith and to her family.
She is survived by her dedicated husband of 66 years, Lawrence Looby, with whom she shared a lifetime oflove and partnership, their children: Anne Beermann (Mike), Janet Byrne, and Joseph Looby (Megan). Shewas a proud and nurturing grandmother to eight grandchildren, Cristina Beermann, Shaun Byrne, BrookeBeermann, Colin Byrne, Lawrence Looby, Lydia Looby, Katherine Looby, and Joey Looby, each of whom she cherished deeply and loved unconditionally. Nona was preceded in death by her parents, her son Paul Gerard, and her siblings Robert Lichon and Dorothy Slivinski.
A lifelong learner, Nona pursued higher education part-time while rearing her children. With quiet determination, Nona earned a degree in business majoring in accounting from Youngstown State University, graduating from college the same year as her eldest daughter. Following this, she passed the certified public accountant examination and completed the professional practice requirements, achieving licensure at age 56. These accomplishments reflected her resilience, belief in the value of education, and commitment to personal excellence. She worked for several firms until her retirement at age 72.
Nona also volunteered and held leadership roles in several organizations including the Youngstown State University Women’s Club, the Youngstown Children’s Playhouse, the American Heart Association, La Leche League, and the Ave Maria Martha’s Ministry.
Those who knew Nona will remember her for her deep and steady Faith, the warmth of her hospitality, her selfless and unpretentious grace, and her subtle wit. She listenedintently, loved completely, and leaves a legacy of humility, integrity, and compassion.
She is also survived by her siblings Lois Johnson (Roger), Sharon Lichon, Tim Lichon (Janet), sister-in-law Marion Looby, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Visits with and events involving her extended family were a source of great joy to Nona throughout her life.
A Rosary and Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on July 11, 2025, at Ave Maria Catholic Church in Parker, Colorado. Nona’s funeral Mass can be viewed at https://youtube.com/live/hns5zVDlb6o?feature=share.
