Susan Koehler Ernest passed away on June 28, 2025, at the age of 75. She was born to Richard and Dorothy (Fenton) Koehler and grew up in Methuen, Massachusetts. After living in Methuen for several years, she moved to Peterborough, New Hampshire, where she graduated from Peterborough High School in 1968. She went on to graduate from the Katharine Gibbs School in 1969, then relocated to Boise, Idaho, where she earned a BBA in Economics from Boise State University in 1975, and an MBA in 1977. Boise became her home for the rest of her life. There, she met the love of her life, Ronald Ernest, and in 2003, they were married in San Antonio, Texas. She became the proud stepparent of Ron’s children, Matthew and Anne.
Susan spent a long and fulfilling professional career at the Intermountain Gas Company. She joined the company as a financial analyst in 1980 and rose to become Vice President of Administrative Services in 1992. She retired in 2006. Throughout her career, she served as a loaned executive for Junior Achievement and was actively involved with Idaho Business Week, the Women’s and Children’s Alliance, and the United Way. She was honored with a Tribute to Women and Industry (TWIN) award in recognition of her contributions.
Outside of work, Susan found joy in her friendships and many hobbies. She was an avid golfer who spent countless hours on the course with a close-knit group of friends. She was also a devoted member of a book club, and those who knew her before her golfing days recall her enthusiasm for racquetball, tennis, and even pinball. She especially loved Halloween and went all out in celebrating it—dressing up in creative costumes and handing out full-size candy bars to the children in her neighborhood. At home, she relished quiet evenings with her beloved black cat, Nixie.
Susan was preceded in death by her husband, Ron, and her parents, Richard and Dorothy. She is survived by her stepchildren, Matthew Ernest (wife Erin) of Dayton, OH, and Anne McMurtrey (husband Scott) of Salt Lake City, UT; and by her grandchildren, Ava and Eli Ernest, and Oliver and Amelia McMurtrey.
She also leaves behind her brother, Peter Koehler (wife Paula) of Nahant, MA; and three nephews: Jed Koehler (wife Julie) and their children, Summer and Joey, of Amesbury, MA; Eric Koehler (partner Joe Hazard) of Boston, MA; and Kenneth Koehler (wife Kaitlynn Cooney) of Somerville, MA. She will also be fondly remembered by her dear cousin, J. Philip Dowd (wife Susan) of North Andover, MA, and by her many cherished friends.
In accordance with Susan’s wishes, no formal service will be held. Her remains are interred at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Boise. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Tee of Idaho.
