Flahiff Funeral Chapels & Crematory-Caldwell
Dennis Carl Helkenn, Sr.
September 15th, 1953 - July 28th, 2025
Dennis Carl Helkenn, Sr., 71, of Caldwell, Idaho, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.
Dennis was born on September 15, 1953, in Casper, Wyoming, and moved to Alaska at the age of 8—a place that would shape his soul and spark a lifelong love for the outdoors. Whether snowmachining through fresh powder, camping with his wife Susan, gold panning in the quiet streams, or tinkering in his garage, Dennis felt most alive surrounded by nature and family. His favorite place in the world was his rustic cabin up Montana Creek in Alaska—a treasured retreat that reflected the best of him: peaceful, strong, and full of heart.
Known for his sharp wit, quiet intelligence, and fierce loyalty, Dennis had a presence that filled a room. He could make you laugh with just one line and comfort you without saying a word. Anytime someone asked if he needed anything, he'd grin and reply: “A half-pound bag of hundred-dollar bills.” That playful humor stayed with him through every season of life.
Dennis had a rich and varied career, taking on many adventurous jobs in his younger years before finding steady purpose in his work. He spent 15 years as a manager for a landscaping company and later worked 10 years as a warehouse manager for the Alaska Department of Transportation. He was a leader, a mentor, and a man who always showed up when it mattered.
Above all, Dennis was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He and his beloved wife, Susan, shared 24 years of marriage, having wed on the anniversary of the very day they met. Their love was deep, full of laughter, loyalty, and mutual admiration. Susan was the love of his life, and he never let a day go by without making her feel it.
Dennis was a father in every sense of the word. He embraced his blended family with open arms, treating all his children as his own—with the same patience, pride, and unconditional love. He was the kind of dad who fixed broken things, gave quiet advice, and cheered the loudest at milestones. As a grandfather to 18 grandkids, he was playful, protective, and endlessly proud.
He is survived by his loving wife, Susan Helkenn; his children: Wendi Lelle, Chelsea Ramirez, Benjamin Helkenn, Nicholas Sichting, Brandon Sichting, and Melissa Sichting; 18 grandchildren; his brother, Howard Helkenn; and his sisters, Merry Johnson and Kathy Londraville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Patricia and Vernon Helkenn, and his son, Dennis Helkenn, Jr.
Dennis also had a deep love for animals and was never without a four-legged companion. His animals were family, too.
He lived with courage, humor, and an open heart. He taught those around him to live fully, love deeply, and never take life too seriously. His steady hands, kind eyes, and unforgettable grin leave an imprint on all who knew him.
Dennis leaves behind a legacy of strength, laughter, and fierce love—a family knit together by his presence, and a world better for having had him in it.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Friends and family will gather to share stories, music, and memories in the spirit of the life Dennis lived so well.
Services will be held at a later date. Services are under the care of Flahiff Funeral Chapel, Caldwell. (208) 459-0833
