Alfred Sizer Horton

Mr. Alfred S. Horton, 87, of Kernersville passed away on July 30, 2025 surrounded by family at his home.  Born in Hillsville, Virginia, he was the son of the late Sizer and Sadie (Quesinberry) Horton and husband to Ruth Largen Horton.

He had a long career as an expert pipe welder in the nuclear power industry. He began his career at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company working on nuclear submarines in Virginia. He worked at ITT Grinnell piping fabrication shop in Kernersville, NC. He also worked for TVA on nuclear power plants in Tennessee.

In his spare time, he enjoyed a successful drag racing career as a driver and crew chief. He competed at many tracks from Georgia to Ohio. He was an inspiration to young racers and was once voted Crew Chief of the Year at Farmington Dragway in Mocksville, NC. At 80 years old he was still winning rounds and was a respected competitor.

The greatest joy in his life was his family. He loved spending time with them. From cookouts to Easter egg hunts, just being together was enough for Alfred. 

Alfred is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Ruth Horton; his children, David Horton (Scarlett), Jason Horton (Kathy), and Diana Allison (Jamie); his grandchildren, Angela Horton, Ava Horton, Jennifer Heyl-Parks (Elliott), Sarah Horton, Lauren Horton, Sydney Allison, Cole Allison; his great-grandson, Jordan Parks; his siblings, Christine Brown, Jerry Lee Horton, Kathleen Waller, Randy Horton, and Jimmy Horton; and many nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Jeff Horton; his siblings, Lorraine Pinkerton, Freeman Horton, and Wiladean Warf.

The family will receive friends at Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Service, 213 W. Mountain St. Kernersville NC 27284 on Saturday, August 2, 2025 from 12:00PM-12:45PM.  Funeral services will begin at 1:00PM with Pastor Theron Phillips officiating.  Interment will follow at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory in Kernersville, North Carolina.
