On August 7th, 2025, the world lost one of the most remarkable men God ever placed on this Earth. While we grieve his passing here, Heaven has undoubtedly gained a cherished angel in Wayne Britt. Wayne left us after a courageous battle with cancer, just a week before his 83rd birthday.

Although Wayne may have lost the battle, he certainly won the war. He is now resting in the presence of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, free from pain and suffering. Throughout his fight, he fought tirelessly and lived each day to the fullest. Wayne was a loving husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, "dog dad" to his beloved Fritzi, and a faithful friend to all. His patriotic spirit was evident; he loved his country deeply and was known for his generous and caring nature.

Born on August 13, 1942, in Lumberton, North Carolina, Wayne graduated from Orum High School in 1961 and then from Durham Barber College in 1963. He later proudly served in the United States Army and was also a gifted athlete, known for his speed. He often said that his two sons, David and Jonathan, inherited his athletic ability—both played tennis at UNC Chapel Hill and Davidson College, respectively. However, he always quickly added that they inherited their brains and good looks from their mother, Sandy. That being said, Wayne was quite the historian, and his love for history and the wealth of historical knowledge he possessed was quite impressive.

Wayne’s passion for helping others was legendary. He would give you the shirt off his back and always sought to lend a helping hand to those in need. Throughout his lifetime, there's no telling how many free haircuts he gave to people. It was a gift he cherished deeply, and his giving spirit touched numerous lives. Giving and caring for others was something he believed in wholeheartedly, and he tried earnestly to teach his two sons the same, as he believed that’s how God wanted us to be. Wayne loved the holidays and Christmas time, and he and Sandy always helped a family in need each year. He taught his sons how important it was to do so throughout their lives.

He was one of Charlotte’s longest-standing barbers, recognized by people everywhere. His barbershop, Sharon Barber & Style, which he owned for over 50 years, was more than a place to get a haircut; it was an institution. A welcoming space where three generations—grandfather, father, and grandson—all got their hair cut, it was a testament to the lasting impact Wayne had on his community. So much so that even customers who moved to different parts of the country or overseas would still make special trips back to Charlotte just to get their haircut from him—a true testament to how much people loved Wayne. While they were loyal customers and dear friends, they were more like family, and that's exactly how Wayne saw them.

At his core, Wayne was a man of God and love. His devotion to living a godly life and to his wife, Sandy, was evident to all. Their love story was extraordinary and inspiring—a bond that exemplified true partnership and commitment. Many would compare their love to something found only in books or movies. Wayne and Sandy recently celebrated their 56th anniversary in June and were one of those couples that everyone aspired to emulate. They were truly inseparable and loved and respected each other more than words can express. They thoroughly enjoyed life together and created lasting memories with their family. They loved their yearly family beach trips more than anything and also cherished the trips overseas they took with their son, Jonathan.

A devoted father, grandfather, and father-in-law, Wayne cherished every moment with his children, David and Jonathan; his grandchildren—Charlotte, Wright, and Jennings—and his daughter-in-law, Lauren. His love for them was boundless and profoundly deep. Wayne’s adoration for them was unparalleled; they were the light of his life, and his heart swelling with pride whenever he was with them. His joy was immeasurable when sharing special moments, and his love for them will forever be imprinted on their hearts. Seeing the pure love that would shine in Wayne's eyes when he was in the presence of his grandchildren is something that would melt your heart. He was so proud of each of them—and eternally grateful to David, Adria, Jonathan, and Lauren—for bringing these beautiful children into his and Sandy's lives and making them grandparents.

Wayne also loved playing his harmonica and listening to The Oak Ridge Boys, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and of course, Elvis. In Heaven, we imagine he’s already playing music alongside Joe Bonsall, a close family friend and long-time member of The Oak Ridge Boys who passed away last year.

His sense of humor was unparalleled; he kept everyone laughing with his quick wit and spontaneous humor. Watching Wayne laugh, joke, and carry on over the years with his good friends Jimmy Jackson, John Smith, and Pete Ayers was truly a delight. Spending time with those friends were some of his greatest memories. The joyful spirit and kindness Wayne had left a lasting impression on everyone he met. It’s remarkable how many of David and Jonathan’s friends from around the country, who grew up playing tennis with them, still speak fondly of seeing Wayne at tournaments over the years. He was truly a special person, beloved by all who knew him.

So, we bid farewell to a truly extraordinary man—an exceptional husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, "dog dad," and beloved member of the community. The family deeply appreciates all the love, support, and prayers extended during this difficult time. Your kindness means the world to them.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of Wayne’s fight.

They would like to extend a special thanks to all their family, friends, relatives, and healthcare professionals. The family also extends gratitude to Hankins and Whittington Funeral Home, as well as to their home church, Myers Park United Methodist Church.

Wayne Britt is survived by his loving wife, Sandra Turner Britt; his brother, Gerald Black (Rene); his sons, David Wayne Britt and Jonathan Hoyt Britt (Lauren); and his grandchildren, Charlotte Benton Britt, David Wainwright "Wright" Britt, and Jennings Wayne Britt. He was preceded in death by his mother, Nelda Britt Black, and stepfather, Boyce Black.

Wayne’s legacy of love, kindness, and service will forever remain in our hearts. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit lives on. May he rest in eternal peace.

A memorial service will take place 2 pm Tuesday August 26, 2025, at Myers Park United Methodist Church,1501 Queens Rd., Charlotte, NC with the family receiving visitors following the service.
