Daniel J. Mahoney, 64, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer on July 30, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 37 years, Lorraine Mahoney; his beloved children, Rachel Montgomery (Tyler Montgomery) and Jeffrey Mahoney; his cherished siblings, Geraldine Ryan (Hank Ryan), Maureen Vier (John Vier), and sister-in-law Lynn Mahoney. He is also lovingly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Veronica Mahoney; his brother, Michael Mahoney; and his dear cousin, Marilyn Byrne.

A fourth-generation San Franciscan, Dan was raised in the Parkside District. He was a proud graduate of St. Cecilia School, St. Ignatius High School, St. Mary’s College (Bachelor of Arts in Management), and Colorado Technical University (Master of Science in Business Management).

Dan dedicated over 30 years of distinguished service to the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD). Throughout his career, he served with unwavering commitment and integrity across numerous district stations including Central, Taraval, Northern, Ingleside, and Park. He also held key roles in specialized units such as Narcotics, Vice, Staff Services, Special Investigations, the Legal Division, Administrative Bureau, the Chief of Staff’s Office, and the Chief’s Office. He was instrumental in the creation and implementation of the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT), a significant advancement in the department’s response to serious traffic collisions and vehicular incidents.

Following his retirement from SFPD, Dan continued his law enforcement service as Deputy Director of the Northern California Regional Intelligence Center (NCRIC), where he oversaw critical Homeland Security programs, including the Terrorism Liaison Officer Outreach Program, the Private Sector Outreach Program, the Information Technology Unit, the Risk Management–Infrastructure Protection Unit, and the Cyber Analytical Unit.

In addition to his law enforcement career, Dan co-founded and operated Traffic Collision Consultants, Inc. with his late brother Mike, a company specializing in accident investigations.

Dan’s dedication to his community was evident not only in his career, but also in the many ways he gave his time through volunteering. Over the course of his life, he served on various boards including: the Mount Diablo Soccer Association (MDSA), Treasurer of the Live Oak Homeowners Association, and President of the Crystyl Ranch Homeowners Association.

Though proud of his professional and personal accomplishments, Dan’s greatest joy in life was his family. As a devoted father, he never missed an opportunity to support and participate in his children’s lives from coaching their sport teams to chaperoning field trips. He was always present and never missed an opportunity to make his family laugh with his classic “dad jokes.” Friday pizza and game nights were cherished traditions with his family.

Dan had an easygoing charm and a quick wit that made him instantly likeable. He built lifelong friendships with coworkers and just about anyone lucky enough to spend time with him. Always dependable and never more than a phone call away, Dan was the guy you could count on—whether you needed advice or a laugh. In his later years, he especially looked forward to his Thursday morning “old guys” call with his former NCRIC coworkers.

In his free time, Dan enjoyed golfing, bowling in his Tuesday night league, and making lasting memories on yearly family vacations. As a passionate supporter of Bay Area sports, Dan was a devoted San Francisco 49ers and San Francisco Giants fan. He rarely missed a 49ers home game and could always be found in the stands, proudly wearing the team’s red and gold.

Dan also had a deep appreciation for wine and was a longtime member of Domaine Carneros, where he became one of the earliest members—proudly holding wine club member #8, a fact he shared with enthusiasm and pride.

Dan Mahoney was a man of integrity, humor, and heart. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

A memorial mass will be held on September 24, 2025, at 11:00am at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church (2601 San Ramon Valley Blvd, San Ramon, CA 94583). A celebration of life will follow at The Bridges Golf Club in the Garden Pavilion (9000 S Gale Ridge Rd, San Ramon, CA 94582).
