Gilbert passed peacefully during a brief hospital stay. He was born in Amarillo, Texas, to Gilbert Jessie Sr. and Mattie (Risby) Jessie. He had one brother, Allen Risby. While Gilbert had no biological children, he considered himself to be a father to children from a previous marriage.
Gilbert is preceded in death by his parents and brother. He is survived by his cousin, Judy Thomas; Bobbie Cooper; and a hot of other family and friends.
