Harvey George Hopkins

Harvey George Hopkins peacefully passed away on August 18, 2025 at the age of 90 in Tucson, Arizona.  Harvey is survived by his son Scott (Andrea) of Tucson, Arizona, his brother Tim (Sue) of Upton, Massachusetts, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife Dawn (Solum) Hopkins, his father and mother Lyle and Belva Hopkins, sister Gaynelle, and brother William.

Harvey was a spirited man and energetic leader who touched many lives.  Harvey was born on June 1, 1935 in Mitchell, South Dakota.  He married Dawn Solum on June 30, 1956.  After graduating from Dakota Wesleyan University, Harvey worked in retail and then went to work for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota.  Over the next 35 years, Harvey’s career at Blue Cross would go from being an auditor to eventually becoming a senior vice president and chief financial officer.  During his career, he would mentor many colleagues, helping them to become leaders in the health insurance industry.

Harvey loved to be active and involved in all sports, from biking to softball.  As a young man, he played football, basketball, and even won a Golden Gloves Boxing championship in South Dakota.  In later years, Harvey and Dawn were active skiers and avid horseback riders.  For over 20 years, they ran a 10-acre hobby farm in Farmington, Minnesota, where they boarded and raised horses and competed in statewide English riding contests.

After Harvey retired, he and Dawn left Minnesota and moved to Casa Grande, Arizona. Harvey and Dawn loved golfing.  They toured the country in their RV, where they would spend summers in Minnesota visiting family and attending their grandchildren’s sporting events and school activities.

Harvey and Dawn were devoted Christians and actively supported their churches.  Harvey’s work included participating on mission trips, small groups, prison ministries, and helping to start the church in their retirement community. Harvey loved to share his beliefs with friends and family as well as provide counsel and support where needed.

Harvey was Dawn’s caretaker after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease until her passing in 2023.  Following her death, Harvey developed Alzheimer’s and moved to Ranch Estates of Tucson, where he continued to touch the hearts of residents and staff at Ranch Estates.

A celebration of life service will be determined at a later date.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family kindly requests that donations be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association. A tribute page can be found on their website by searching for “Harvey and Dawn Hopkins” or by using the following the following link:
