Sharon Russow Blackburn, 82, of Cocoa Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. A brilliant mind and a creative spirit, she dedicated her life to the art of American literature and the nurturing of her son, shaping his mind and heart with equal devotion.

Born on February 23, 1943, in Rockford, Illinois, to the late Selma and Roy Russow, Sharon showed an early fascination with stories and a talent for expression. She pursued her passion for literature at Illinois State University, where she earned a Master of Arts in English and a teaching certification, a testament to her lifelong commitment to education.

Sharon was an avid reader from a young age, often staying up late into the night with a flashlight and a good book. Her personal library was a lifelong project, a testament to her curiosity, filled with a diverse collection of authors from Faulkner to the current New York Times bestsellers. After graduating, she embarked on a lifelong career as an American literature teacher, first at Cocoa High School, then moving to Cocoa Beach High School, where she spent the rest of her career. In addition to her classroom teaching, she was a guiding creative force behind the school's yearbook and the iconic Wings of Fancy literary magazine. She didn't just teach the classics; she made them live for her students, inspiring countless pupils to love reading, writing, and thinking creatively, leaving an indelible mark on generations of students.

Upon retirement, Sharon continued to pursue her passion for creativity and community by working at her friend’s clothing store, Shobha’s boutique. She was a valued colleague and a familiar, friendly face to customers, sharing her flair for style with a new audience. She found delight in the simple pleasure of doing her scratch-off tickets, and was known for her masterful dining table designs, which she would adorn with sparkly gems, different types of polished rocks, and other creative objects. She loved visiting Chicago, immersing herself in its vibrant culture, and was a dedicated member of her book club. A sociable and fun-loving person, she enjoyed playing cards, shopping with friends and was a devoted fan of live theater.

Above all, she was a mother whose love was as boundless as her imagination. She saw the potential in her son, Mark, and encouraged him to explore his unique talents. She took special pride in Mark, a University of Florida graduate who followed in her creative footsteps in the advertising world of Chicago. Her home was always open, and she was a steadfast source of wisdom and strength to Mark, helping with everything from term papers to creative ideas.

Sharon will be deeply missed by her son, Mark Blackburn, and her cherished granddaughter, Natalie Blackburn. She is survived by her brother, Dave Russow, his wife, Becky Russow, her nieces, Ashley Kaumeyer, Tiffany Kupkowski, and nephew, Brian Russow. Her memory will be cherished in every well-turned phrase, every cherished book, and every beautifully designed tabletop inspired by her endless curiosity.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Susan G. Komen, komen.org/endcancer
