Charles Gordon Raetzman
May 22nd, 1937 - September 1st, 2025
Charles Gordon Raetzman, born May 22, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois, passed peacefully in the arms of his life partner and devoted caretaker, Carol Fisher.
Chuck lived a full and meaningful life, defined by his devotion to family, his love of the outdoors, and his deep ties to the University of Arizona community. A talented athlete, he attended the University of Arizona on a football scholarship in 1956. In his senior year, he was honored with the Governor’s Award for Most Valuable Player. He went on to earn his degree in Horticulture and proudly carried the spirit of a Wildcat throughout his life.
Chuck began his career in horticulture with John Harlow and Associates for eight years. He then dedicated 32 years to the University of Arizona, where he cared for the campus grounds with pride, especially the athletic fields he held close to his heart. His work was more than a job—it was a legacy that continues to live on in the fields and memories of those who knew him.
Beyond his career, Chuck was a devoted father, life partner, and grandfather. He is survived by his best friend and son Garrett (Jody), his beloved partner of 40 years, Carol Fisher, and his cherished grandchildren: Charles (Gracie), Cody, Conner (Ella), and Colton. To his son/grandchildren, he was more than a father/grandfather—he was a teacher, mentor, and constant source of wisdom, instilling in them a strong work ethic, practical life skills, and countless memories shared together in Sonoita and Montana.
Chuck was the kind of man who never met a stranger. His kindness, generosity, and easy spirit made him a friend to all—there isn’t a soul on this earth with a bad word to say about him. His profound loss will be deeply felt and forever remembered.
A celebration of life will be held on November 23, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Frog and Firkin in Tucson, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Charles honor to "The UAF/Arizona Campus Arboretum". Envelopes should be addressed to: The Campus Arboretum PO BOX 210036 Tucson AZ 85721
