John J. Sullivan III
June 5th, 1939 - September 7th, 2025
John J. Sullivan III, a proud resident of Belchertown, Massachusetts for 58 years, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2025, at the age of 86. Born in Springfield and raised in Hungry Hill, John lived a life defined by service, ingenuity, strength and generosity.A veteran of over 30 years, John served first in the U.S. Navy and later in the Air Force Reserves, traveling the world and embracing adventure at every turn. In the 1990s, he founded the Very Important Veterans (VIP) program, providing local benefits to families of those serving in Operation Desert Storm. After retiring, he continued his commitment to fellow servicemembers as a founding member of the Western Massachusetts Veterans Court program, helping guide veterans toward healing and justice.John was a renaissance man in every sense—resourceful, hard-working, and endlessly generous. A graduate of Springfield Technical High School and American International College, he held many professions including history teacher, electrician, and real estate specialist for the U.S. Postal Service. He could fix anything, build anything, and always found a way to make life better for those around him. His home was a reflection of his care and craftsmanship, and his family was the heart of everything he did.He was married to his beloved wife, Barbara, for 58 years. Together they raised two children, Brigitte and John Sullivan, and shared countless adventures—including cruises around the world after retirement. John was a devoted grandfather to Maia and James Reeb, and Olivia and Maeve Sullivan, and nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his family. Family and friends looked to him as a role model, drawing inspiration from his hard work, determination and optimism – always facing challenges with the phrase “onward and upward!”.John had a passion for cool cars, coin collecting, and history. He delighted in parties, serving his specially crafted cocktails and at dinner was known to surprise guests by secretly paying the check. He loved giving gifts—always arriving with presents in hand for friends and family. His generosity was boundless, his spirit infectious, and his presence unforgettable.A visitation will be held on Sunday, September 14, 2025, 3pm-6pm, at Beers & Story Funeral Home in Belchertown, with a service of remembrance and reflection at 5pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clapp Memorial Library, honoring John’s lifelong love of reading and support of the community.
