Kathleen "Kathy" Marie Spurgin
October 1st, 1953 - August 31st, 2025
Kathleen Marie Spurgin, of Longmont, Colorado, passed away on August 31, 2025 from a brain aneurysm. Born in Nelson, Nebraska, on October 1, 1953 Kathy lived the first ten years of her life on the family farm outside of town. She loved farm life working with animals and doing chores with her beloved father Russell O. Wilson.
Tragedy struck when her father died in a farming accident in 1963 causing the family to sell the farm and move to town in Superior, Nebraska. She graduated from Superior High School (NE) in 1971. After graduation Kathy worked several different jobs before taking a position working for a local cattle feedlot where she was able to once again work with animals and ride horses.
She met her husband, Douglas Spurgin while helping transport horses for the feedlot owner who was Doug’s uncle. Their relationship blossomed into an adventure taking them to Oregon to work on different farms and ranches together. One job was as ranch managers of a remote, off the grid ranch in central Oregon. Living without electricity and running water brought the couple even closer together.
They were married in Redmond, Oregon on June 26, 1977. While working at various jobs Doug decided he should return to college back home in California and seek a better more lucrative profession. Kathy supported him to complete his education by working as a medical records librarian in a convalescent hospital in Southern California. After Doug became a Certified Public Accountant, the couple lived happily in SoCal for many years. Kathy and Doug’s life changed when their son Gregory was born in 1993. Gregory became the center of Kathy’s world as she devoted all of her time and effort to care for her family and home.
Yearning for a change in lifestyle and not wanting to raise their son in the city the couple decided to move to Colorado where they settled down on a small acreage outside of Longmont. Kathy could once again enjoy being around animals as she raised calves and tended to a horse and chickens in addition to dogs & cats.
Country living became her treasured lifestyle that she shared with family and friends. Kathy will be remembered for her fun-loving sense of humor, independence, quiet dignity, and the love she shared with her family and those around her.
A celebration of life will be held at a future yet to be determined date.
