Ammen Family Cremation & Funeral Care - Palm Bay
Helen Smith Cleland
February 14th, 1934 - September 1st, 2025
Helen Smith Cleland, 91, of Palm Bay, went home to be with the Lord on September 1, 2025, with her daughter, Stephanie, by her side. Born in Richmond, Virginia, to Robert and Ida Smith, Helen was a shining example of grace, strength, and softness. She spent her life bringing joy to everyone she encountered.
Helen was the loving wife of the late Franklin (Ed) Cleland, sharing 54 faithful years of marriage until his passing in 2015. She was the devoted mother of two daughters, Susan and Stephanie, and the doting grandmother of one granddaughter, Lauren. Her family cherished her for her wisdom, humor, and her ability to bring a smile to the face of any stranger.
Helen worked for the state of Virginia for many years as a secretary. A devout member of the Lutheran church, she spent many hours in prayer and study of the Word of God. In her younger years, camping in the Blue Ridge Mountains was one of her favorite pastimes. She also enjoyed crocheting, reading Amish novels, and tending her vegetable garden. She could often be found perusing the shelves of her local library.
Helen is survived by her daughters, Susan Cleland and Stephanie (Michael) Tenney, and her granddaughter, Lauren Tenney. She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin; her parents; and her sisters, Frances and Mary.
Per Helen’s wishes, no memorial services will be held. The family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor her memory consider a donation to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida – a cause that was near to her heart.
Helen’s strength and wisdom are forever reflected by one of her favorite Scripture passages, Proverbs 3:5-6, which reads, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
