Lawrence (Hans/Larry) Ulrich, 74, of Beltsville MD, passed away on September 10, 2025 at White Oak Adventist Hospital, surrounded by family and friends. Born in Washington, DC on April 22, 1951 to Selma and Stan Ulrich, Larry was a devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather, and had an extensive group of friends whom he loved.

Larry graduated from Springbrook High School and after receiving a high draft number decided to travel with friends. During the early days of his wandering, he joined a commune later known as The Farm, but left after a few months. Later his travels took him all over the US and eventually to Costa Rica where he met his first wife, Patricia. Patricia and Larry separated but his relationship with his stepson Pablo was and is the brightest star from that period of his life and their relationship has continued. Larry met his second wife Beth at a Halloween party thrown by a mutual friend and after several months they moved into a duplex and their parties were legendary. Eventually Larry and Beth decided to move from Virginia to Maryland to be closer to Larry’s family and that is when they were pleasantly surprised to welcome their daughter Nicole into the world. Larry was absolutely over the moon in love with his darling girl and would often come home unexpectedly to play with her.  When his brother Harry died suddenly, he moved his family closer to his parents to help them.

Larry’s career/work life reflected his flexibility and work ethic. When he returned from Costa Rica, he co-ran a silk screen business in DC with a talented friend. He got a job at Red Coats cleaning service as the crew chief and supervised the cleaning and maintenance at the National Cathedral. When he moved from Maryland to Virginia, he got a job at the Prevention of Blindness Society and fine-tuned the charitable property donations much to the benefit of the society. He took classes and became a licensed private investigator, working on many cases including the Lewinsky affair. He worked weekends at Georgetown Square Wine and Cheese (his father’s store) and served process for Capitol Process Services. In 2013 after an injury at work and his father’s death, Larry retired to be more helpful to his mother.

Hans' hobbies and interests were varied and entered into with enthusiasm. Larry had an extensive knowledge of the statistics and performance of baseball players and race horses. Larry and Harry went to frequent baseball games in DC as children learning about the game and players first hand. When they got older they would frequent the racetracks as well. Larry played cards on a regular basis with his best friends, David and Bubba. He also enjoyed board games with family and friends and was unbeatable at scrabble and cribbage. He joined a fantasy baseball league and ended up in charge after a few years, then continued to add new people as friends when players would drop out. He became interested in bourbon and made many new friends as a member of the bourbon society. Larry maintained many friends from high school and rekindled relationships with even more classmates after attending a high school reunion with his first love, Jacqui.

Larry’s opinions and beliefs were deeply held and he believed in animal rights, all people’s rights. and individual freedoms. His lifelong pescatarian diet and liberal views were always shared freely with other people. The recent undercurrent in the country was deeply disturbing to him. Holding a strong moral compass himself it was difficult for him to see others lose their way.

Larry is survived by his adoring daughter Nicole (Christian), his much beloved son Pablo (Carmen), his granddaughter, Adelyn, who was the light of his life, and his partner in crime and wife, Beth.

Larry’s parents preceded him in death as did his beloved brother Harry.

A celebration of life will be held on September 24, 2025, from 4–7 p.m. at Kabu, 14601 Baltimore Avenue, Laurel, MD. Friends and family are kindly asked to RSVP at [email protected] or 443-540-0618.
