James Lamar Dees passed away on September 15, 2025 in Largo, FL at the age of 82. Born September 30, 1942 in Bartow, FL, Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, and colleague who made a lasting impact on all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Maryanne Dees; his children, Justin Lamar Dees and Jason Lamar Dees; and stepchildren Col. Christopher Putman (Mary Anne) and Patricia Putman (Van Phrasavath). Jim was a proud "Pop-Pop" to grandsons MJ, Dylan, and Jaxyn Dees, and a cherished "Grandpa Jim" to Taylor Gmitro, Alex Putman, and Lorenzo and Samuel Phrasavath. Known as "Jimmy D" to many beloved friends all over town, and especially his neighbors at The Cloisters, Jim's warmth and generosity will be deeply missed. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Judy Mae Dees, the mother of his children.
A proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran (Sgt., 1962-1966), Jim carried the values of hard work, service and dedication throughout his life. Jim served as Director of Operations for Federal Express and he had a lengthy second career locally as Director of Transportation for The Pier and most recently, with the Looper Group. A graduate of Hillsborough High School (Tampa, FL, 1961), Jim also served over 10 years as an usher at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where he was known for his kindness and commitment.
Jim will be remembered for his compassion for others, quickly lending a helping hand to anyone in need. He loved gathering with family and friends to share stories, good food and lots of laughs. He enjoyed spending time with his many grandchildren, weekend football, and drives down the beach in his convertible Mustang. Jim had a remarkably strong work ethic and he was very proud of his work and the contributions of our country’s service men and women from all branches. Jim will receive full military honors for his service in the United States Marine Corps and laid to rest at Bay Pines National Cemetery.
