Fay Shorter Gillispie
June 16th, 1939 - September 20th, 2025
Fay Shorter Gillispie, 86, of Lynchburg passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday September 20, 2025.
Born June 16, 1939, in Lynchburg, Fay was the daughter of the late Sterling and Ethel Shorter.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband of 61 years Dr. Fred D. Gillispie, Jr. and her brother Boyd Shorter and his wife Louise.
Fay is lovingly remembered by her son, Rick, as well as two nieces and a nephew. She was also devoted to her cherished cat, Cuddles, who brought her much companionship and comfort. Over the last few years, Fay has been supported by a number of dedicated caregivers. Janice Merriman and Angela Simpson played an especially significant role in ensuring that Fay was able to enjoy a fulfilling and comfortable life at home until her passing.
Fay graduated from E.C. Glass High School and Lynchburg College and became a fourth-grade teacher. She spent her life teaching, whether as a classroom teacher, a volunteer in the city schools, or as a Sunday school teacher at Centenary United Methodist Church. Although Fay enjoyed teaching, it was the children that brought her real joy.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Lynchburg Humane Society or to Centenary United Methodist Church.
A graveside service will be held at 11am Friday, September 26, 2025 at Fort Hill Memorial Park with Pastor John Moxley officiating.
