Howard Ray Payne

Howard Ray Payne, age 82 of Kingsport, TN, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. Howard was born on July 7, 1943, in Wise County, VA to Hubert and Helen Payne. Howard served proudly in the U.S. Marines and worked as a coal miner for 20 years. On October 8, 1977, Howard married his beloved Jane, and after 18 years of a beautiful marriage, she preceded him in death on January 11, 1996.

Howard loved his family, and he enjoyed fishing, watching old Westerns, and hunting. He loved the Lord, and he was a man of faith.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Jane Payne; and his sister, Linda Payne Grizzle. Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Brenda Farley; two brothers, Jerry Payne and wife, Dovie, and Hubert Payne Jr.; and many loving nieces, nephews, and other family members.

The family will receive friends on Monday, September 29, 2025, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Carter-Trent Funeral Home in Kingsport. A graveside service will be held at Peaceful Acres Cemetery in Cumberland, KY on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at 11:00 am. Howard’s family and friends will be serving as pallbearers. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:50 am. The cemetery is located on Peaceful Cemetery Road, Cumberland, KY 40823.
