Janet Marie Byrne
November 5th, 1933 - August 16th, 2025
Mrs. Janet Byrne, 91, of Hudson, Wisconsin, formerly of Amery, Wisconsin passed away peacefully at Hudson Hospital surrounded by family on August 16, 2025. She is survived by her six children and their partners: Jonathan (Paula), David (Julie), Tracey (Brian), Erin (Andreas), Matthew (Karen), Christopher (Alicia); eleven grandchildren: Ben, Nate, Addie, Miranda, Mackenzie, Devlin, Alana, Jackson, Gabriel, Madison, and William; and eight great-grandchildren.
Jan was born in Canton, Massachusetts, and was preceded in death by her loving husband William Byrne, her parents Charles Stanley Mathews and Eugenie Russell, and her siblings Stan, Joyce, Carolyn, Susan, and David.
Jan attended nursing school in Boston, Massachusetts where she met Bill while he was attending Harvard Medical School. She and Bill were married in 1954, and they spent two years in France where Bill was a flight surgeon in the US Air Force.
Jan and Bill lived in Amery for 40 years where they raised their children, played tennis and golf, and entertained many friends and neighbors. Jan was an avid reader, and also enjoyed cooking and sewing. She was active in the community–supporting the library and delivering meals on wheels, among other activities.
Not only was Jan the mother of her six children, but she was also an honorary mother to the many neighbors and friends of her six kids that frequently visited their home on Birchwood Avenue (with the tennis court, swimming pool, sauna, kegerator, and resident monkey). She was always welcoming and generous to all who visited.
Jan and Bill retired to Nokomis, Florida in 1999, the shark tooth capital of the world. Jan spent time doing water aerobics, birding, walking on the beach, eating fresh seafood, and dodging alligators and hurricanes.
In 2019 Jan moved back to Wisconsin to be closer to friends and family. She lived at Wintergreen and Pine Ridge in Hudson, Wisconsin, where she enjoyed reading, playing Mahjong, Bridge, and 3-13 and celebrating holidays with kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.
The Celebration of Life will be held on November 22, 2025 at the Amery Community Center in Amery, Wisconsin with a reception following. Her ashes have been interred alongside Bill's at the Venice Memorial Gardens in Venice, Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Amery Area Public Library, ATTN: Heather Wiarda, 104 Maple St., Amery, WI 54001.
