Rachel Walls Ammons was born to Mary Lou Artis and Emmett Walls on August 13, 1944 and transitioned on Friday, September 26, 2025 at 7:34 pm at Novant Presbyterian Hospital. Ray as she was lovingly called by her family was a great lover of God and strong in faith. She was passionate about church, serving God and willing to help any person in need whenever she could. Rachel was educated in the Wayne County school system and lived most of her adult life in Mt. Olive.

Rachel was a caregiver at heart. She cared for her mother, grandmother, cousin and aunt during their illnesses. She then became a home nurse aide and worked in that profession until retirement. During her time in Mt. Olive she was baptized at an early age and joined Northeast Freewill Baptist Church where she served on the Usher Board, sang in the choir and was Mother of the Church. She often pulled together different events on behalf of the church and was proud when her planning came together. Rachel and her husband Ross later relocated to Charlotte. While living in Charlotte they joined New Beginnings Community Church where she became involved with the Widow's Group, Life Group and Prayer Group. Rachel loved attending church and would get disappointed if she was unable to attend. Rachel enjoyed crossword puzzles, games shows, spiritual tv, listening to gospel radio stations, caring for her plants, eating out, traveling and a great lover of Sunday Best hats, and calling people she knew just to check on how they were doing.

Rachel was predeceased in death by her husband Ross Ammons and her son Shawn Powell. Rachel leaves to mourn her loss a devoted daughter, Michelle Powell Jones and son-in-law Henry of Charlotte, NC, a devoted and loving sister Barbara Washington of Charlotte, NC, sister Jeanette Colfield of Warsaw, NC, daughter Toni of Charlotte, NC, 6 grandsons Kiante (Morgan), Ayshaun, Jalen, Najee, Jasavion, Ishmael, 1 granddaughter Korrine, 5 great grandchildren, and host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, aunts, cousins, family and friends.

The Funeral Service will be held on Monday October 6 , 2025 11am at Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service  1111 East Blvd. Charlotte NC 28203. The Visitation will be held One hour prior to the service at 10am. Burial will be immediately following at Evergreen Cemetery Charlotte, NC.

The growth of our service and the community's support led to our move in March 1963 to the current location—once St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, built in 1930. Our chapel, a cherished historic landmark within the storied Dilworth neighborhood, is renowned for being the only funeral home in Charlotte graced with its own chapel, echoing with decades of history and serenity....
