Martha Eileen Theresa Jones
September 19th, 1936 - October 1st, 2025
Martha Eileen Theresa Jones (nee Egan), 89, of Mickleton, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on September 19, 1936, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Martha was the daughter of Lloyd and Helen Egan. She graduated from West Catholic Girls High School in Philadelphia in 1954 and went on to work as a secretary at Allstate Insurance, Sorrentino Law, and later with the East Greenwich Township Public Schools.
On June 29, 1963, Martha married Joseph "Joe" Jones Jr. at Good Shepherd Church in Philadelphia, with family friend Monsignor James McDonough officiating. They shared 62 years of marriage after meeting while both were employed at Allstate Insurance. One of Martha’s favorite stories to tell was of how they first encountered each other outside the office: by chance at a bar at the Jersey shore. Spotting Joe walking toward her, she turned to her girlfriends and said, “Oh no, here comes that guy from work.” What began as reluctant recognition quickly grew into a lifelong love story.
Martha was devoted to her family in countless ways. Known for her remarkable typing skills, she often assisted her husband and children by preparing Joe’s master's degree papers and her children’s school reports – always at the dining room table of their Philadelphia rowhome.
She is survived by her husband Joe, and four of their children: Joseph (Jennifer) Jones III, Eileen Ferrara, Daniel (Carlotta) Jones, and John (Doreen) Jones. She was the beloved grandmother of Benjamin (Sarah), Corey (Sarah), Vincent, David, Anna, Noah, Kara, Lindsay, and Katie, and the cherished great-grandmother of Anthony. She was predeceased by her daughter Jennifer and her son-in-law Leonard Ferrara.
Martha’s joy was found in the simple pleasures of life. She was a regular attendee at all her grandchildren’s big events – from preschool graduations to any number of tee-ball games. A loyal patron of Kohl’s and Deptford Mall, she delighted in scouring clearance racks to find just the right outfit she knew a grandchild would love.
She also loved trips to the Atlantic City casinos, where she enjoyed the buffets, comp rooms, shows, and slot machines. Over the years, she and Joe traveled on many cruises, sometimes joined by dear friends and her beloved sisters. A favorite vacation was their trip to Ireland. A two-time survivor of cancer, Martha’s strength and perseverance were hallmarks of her life.
She was an avid viewer of Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, quick to beat her husband to the answers, even in her later years. A happy memory was receiving her first microwave as a gift for their 25th wedding anniversary – a sign of the modern times she delighted in. She liked to claim her drink of choice was Jameson, though no one could recall ever actually seeing her drink it. More recently, her go-to dessert was a simple, plain Klondike bar.
Martha was devoted member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish and cherished time spent with her family.
Martha will be remembered for her warmth, her humor, her devotion to her family, and the countless ways she tirelessly supported those she loved.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 10:00 am at St. Michael's Church, 320 Memorial Avenue, Gibbstown, NJ 08027. A funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 am. Interment will take place at Eglington Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Martha’s memory may be made to St. Clare of Assisi Parish, Swedesboro, New Jersey.
