Sally Wolter Kirouac
June 17th, 1941 - October 3rd, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sally Wolter Kirouac, born on June 17, 1941, in Washington, D.C., and who peacefully departed this life on October 3, 2025, in Olympia, WA. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, cherished for her unwavering honesty, strong will, loyalty, creativity and kindness.
Sally was the daughter of William Hugo Wolter (aka Hux) and Doris Wright Wolter. She graduated from Weldon E. Howitt High School in Farmingdale, NY, in 1959, before earning her Bachelor of Arts from Bennington College in 1963 and a Master of American Studies from Union College. She also studied Graphic Design at Russell Sage College. Her passion for Graphic Design led to a successful career as a Graphic Designer. She was a consummate artist and was always creating in some way--whether drawing, painting, hooking rugs, remaking a home, rebuilding an old bellows organ of her grandmother's, or learning to make (and sell) elaborate pine needle baskets. She loved all kinds of music, art, literature, nature, travel, and animals.
On June 29, 1963, she married George J. Kirouac in Bethpage, New York, building a lifetime of love and memories together. Sally is survived by her son, Ian G. Kirouac (Sierra Montoya), daughters, Gabrielle Kirouac Byrne (Daeg Byrne), and Martha Kirouac (Shanti Rao), along with five beloved grandchildren: Althea, Rowan, Oliver, Colin and Anjuli. She was preceded in death by her husband, George, her parents, and her brother, Bill H. Wolter.
A resident of Boston Harbor since 2014, Sally was an active participant in local community groups. She found joy in playing the recorder, gardening, mahjong, and birdwatching. She was a proud member of the First Unitarian Society of Schenectady NY and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Saratoga Springs, NY.
Sally's vibrant spirit and legacy of kindness will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. In honoring her life, let us cherish the values she instilled within us.
