Ross Amundson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and respected community leader, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on October 2, 2025, in Venice, Florida, at the age of 80.

Born in Dover, Delaware, Ross spent his formative years in Superior, Wisconsin, and cherished summers at Lake Nebagamon. He was the son of the late Ethel and Roland Amundson, whose values of kindness, integrity, and service shaped his life.

Ross graduated from Superior Central High School in 1963, earning 11 varsity letters and All-State honors in football, basketball, and baseball. His athletic achievements were later recognized with his induction into the Superior Athletic Hall of Fame.

He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin, where he was the starting third baseman on the varsity baseball team, and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Arkansas, where he served as an assistant baseball coach and sports television anchor.

After completing his education, Ross settled in Chesterton, Indiana, where he raised his family and worked for many years at Bethlehem Steel’s Burns Harbor plant. His deep sense of civic responsibility led him to become executive director of the Duneland Chamber of Commerce, where he spearheaded a successful membership drive and numerous initiatives that strengthened the region’s economic future, including recruiting new businesses and supporting the construction of a new high school.

In the later years of his career, Ross served as director of government relations for American Water in Gary, representing the company across a three-state region. Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels appointed him to the Gary/Chicago Airport Authority Board, and Ross also served as chairman of the Gary Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and as a member of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Ross was also a gifted communicator, serving as moderator of the long-running local cable news program Porter County Uncovered, which featured thoughtful conversations with community leaders, journalists, and public officials.

Outside of work, Ross remained a passionate athlete. He earned a state racquetball championship in his 50s and a state golf championship in his 70s. After retirement, Ross moved to the community of Venice Beach, Florida, where he continued to dominate the golf course and make many wonderful new friends.

Ross is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Margaret Amundson; his children, Amy Honjo (Shige), Corey Amundson (Susan), and Sarah Cirker (Seth); his grandchildren, Madeline, Drew, Gabriel, Leah, and Nicholas; his brother, Bob Amundson; and his sister, Sally Heytens.
