The sweet scent of a rose will linger long after the bloom has faded

Julianne Adelaide Raz was born June 2, 1942 in Multnomah, Oregon. She was born to Selma Jorgensen Raz and Werner Raz. Selma came from a large Norwegian Family from Sumas, Washington. Werner came from an even larger Swiss/German family who had settled in Hillsdale, Oregon in the late 1800’s.

Her brother Arthur was just 18 months older; her little sister Trudi came three years later.

Julianne grew up in the Hillsdale/Multnomah area when it was mainly dairy farms. She was raised in a large and loving community, rooted in family and the church. Her cousins were her best friends and playmates.

She attended Multnomah School and Woodrow Wilson High School.

On a high school ski trip, she met Christopher Bishop, an athletic and confident boy from Beaverton who later stole her heart.

She started Monmouth Teachers College in the fall of 1960. Eventually, Christopher convinced Julianne to transfer to Lewis and Clark. In the spring of 1964 they graduated and in that summer they married at the Downtown First Congregational Church.

Julianne started teaching for Portland Public Schools in 1964. In 1965 Christopher was drafted into the US Army and was stationed in Germany. While living in Germany in 1968, she and Christopher welcomed their first daughter, Sarah Margaret.

When they returned to the United States, Julianne went back to teaching. Christopher finished at University of Oregon Law School in 1972. That year, they welcomed their second daughter, Amy Elisabeth.

The family was always busy; many weekends were spent building the family beach house in Lincoln City, or working on other construction projects. There was lots of skiing and camping. Summers and school breaks were spent going on road trips to visits family in California, Washington and New York. Julianne was always working, planning and organizing.

Throughout her 33-year career at Portland Public Schools, Julianne taught at Bridlemile, Ockley Green, Stephenson, Skyline and Maplewood. She was a beloved teacher and received praise from her students, parents and colleagues alike.

As grandchildren started to arrive, she became known as Granny, which she relished. She loved the role of grandmother best and delighted in caring for and teaching her six grandchildren.

She and Chris loved to travel. They made numerous trips all over Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, and the United States. Her favorite destination was Switzerland. She made the trip 6 times in her lifetime. She took so much pride in showing her children and grandchildren this special place.

Together she and Christopher built a strong foundation on which all of their descendants stand firm and proud. She was a loving, generous and very present mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and she is greatly missed. We will especially miss her wonderful pies.

She died August 27, 2025, at the age of 83 of complications following a stroke. Her husband Christopher of 56 years preceded her in death in 2021. She is survived by her sister Trudi Raz Frengle, her two daughters Sarah Levison and Amy Bishop Northrop; two son-in-laws Scott Levison and Daniel Northrop; four grandsons Zachary and Reilly Levison, Luke and Isaac Northrop; two granddaughters Erika Hernandez and Michalyn Graebel; two great-grandsons Miguel Hernandez and Alexander Graebel; and another pair of Hernandez twins on the way!

A celebration of life will be held November 1 at 2:00 in SW Portland
