William Dean "Bill" Bayless Jr., 84,” reached out and touched the face of God” on October 6, 2025, in Charleston, SC.

Born in East St. Louis, Illinois, on August 9, 1941, Bill's life was defined by a blend of adventure, service, and deep love for those he held close. A graduate of St. Lawrence University, Bill earned his degree in Chinese Government and Economics, a foundation that would later serve him in both his military and civilian life.

In 1964, Bill was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. After completing Officer Training School, he went on to Navigation Training School at James Connelly Air Force Base in Waco, Texas. Bill's military career took him to Vietnam, where he flew gunships and earned four Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service. He retired from the Air Force in 1985, having served with honor and distinction.

Bill’s love for life extended far beyond his military career. An avid art collector, he was particularly drawn to birds, stamps, and natural landscapes, always seeking out beauty in the world around him. His home was filled with treasures—each piece a reflection of his curiosity and appreciation for the natural world.

But it was his sense of humor that left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Bill’s dry wit often caught people off guard, as you weren’t always sure if he was joking—until his signature bright white smile cracked through. His laugh, spontaneous and infectious, had the power to fill a room and immediately draw everyone into the moment with him.

Above all, Bill was a devoted and loving husband to his wife, Diane Reuter Bayless, whom he married 14 years ago. His love for Diane was unwavering and fierce. He always cared deeply about her safety and happiness, and his protection and devotion to her were evident in everything he did.

Bill's love for life extended to his dogs and his family, and he was known for being a bit of a goofball. Whether telling stories from his many travels or making everyone laugh with his playful antics, Bill's generous spirit and sense of humor made him beloved by all who crossed his path.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Reuter Bayless, his son, William Dean Bayless III, and four stepchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Kay Bayless Ehrlich.

In lieu of flowers, Bill requested that donations be made to the Charleston Animal Society, a cause dear to his heart.
