Mary G. Hunter, of The Villages, Florida, formerly of Old Lyme, Connecticut, passed away on October 9 peacefully with her children, Muffy Hunter-Smith and Scott Hunter, by her side. In the days leading up to her passing, she was visited by family and friends—the people she loved most in the world.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Harold “Hal” Hunter, whom she missed everyday. Together they built a life full of laughter, love, and many adventures. They loved to play golf, entertain friends, and travel together.
Born and raised in New London, Connecticut, Mary was the daughter of Bruno and Winnifred Giri. She was predeceased by her beloved siblings, Margaret “Peggy” (Les) Williams and John “Jack” Giri, and son in law, Chad Smith.
For more than 20 years, she proudly owned and operated Roger’s Lake Liquor Store in Old Lyme, where she became a friendly and familiar face to the Old Lyme community. She volunteered her time as a softball and basketball coach for Old Lyme Park & Rec for many years.
Above all, Mary cherished her family. She adored her grandchildren—Ethan Smith of Clarksburg, Maryland, and Sean and Katherine Hunter of Old Lyme, Connecticut—who brought her endless pride and joy. She was a devoted mother to her daughter, Margaret “Muffy” Hunter-Smith of Clarksburg, her son, Scott Hunter, and favorite daughter in law, Kristen of Old Lyme. She is survived by her loving brother, Bruno (Marlene) Giri of The Villages, FL, her nieces, Beth Williams of Phoenixville, PA and Patty (Bill) Emmons of Mattapoisett, MA, and nieces and nephews, Kaitlin (Schuyler) Emmons, Connor (Melissa) Emmons, Erik (Ally) Mitchell, Leslie Oloughlin, Michael Giri, Bruno Giri, Jr., and Gina (Adam) Green.
Mary’s humor, generosity, and resilient spirit touched everyone who knew her. Her home—and her heart—were always open, and she had a gift for making everyone feel welcome and loved. An avid Red Sox fan and devoted UConn Huskies enthusiast, Mary never missed a game—cheering in the stands or from her living room. She also loved playing mahjong, spending days on the golf course, or crafting with her wonderful friends; they will miss her deeply.
A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Saturday, October 25th, at 11:00 a.m. at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Home, The Villages, Florida. In lieu of flowers, please cheer for the Red Sox or UConn in her honor or make a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
