One is nearer God's heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth.
Shelby Jean Mendenhall, 84, of Blackwater, VA went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 16, 2025, with her family by her side. She was born in Scott County, VA to the late Marion and Edith Edwards. Shelby was an avid gardener and enjoyed making floral arrangements, canning, making apple butter, and spending time with her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Mendenhall; daughter, Donna M. Jones; sister, Wanda Jackson; brother, Mack Edwards.
Survivors include her daughter, Karen Gibson and husband Alan; son, Craig Mendenhall and wife, Nita; 4 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; brothers, Dale, Jimmy (Yvonne), Jackie (Patricia), and Ronald (Carol) Edwards; sisters, Maudine Doran, Sabra Williams (J.D.), and Phyllis Williams; devoted friends, Jeff and Vicky Jones; special friend, Judi Bledsoe; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 11a.m. to 1p.m. on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at Scott County Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at Holston View Cemetery with Evangelist T.J. Hood officiating. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
