Janice Hamill Schiavone
November 23, 1932 – October 14, 2025
Janice Hamill Schiavone, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and neighbor, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2025, in her home in Rockville, Maryland, at the age of 92.
Born at Garfield Hospital in Washington, D.C., on November 23, 1932, Janice was the cherished daughter of Ralph Lane Hamill and Alberta Mae Thibadeau Hamill. She grew up in the D.C. area and graduated from Bethesda Chevy Chase High School, where she was crowned Queen of the Prom in May 1950—a reflection of her warmth, charm, and radiant spirit.
Janice dedicated many years to raising her family in Rockville, Maryland, where she and her husband, Michael Anthony Schiavone, shared 39 years of marriage. Together, they built a loving home and raised two sons. Later in life, Janice worked as a secretary and administrative assistant for a law firm specializing in Real Estate Title and Settlement, where her diligence and attention to detail were deeply valued.
A woman of many passions, Janice found joy in gardening, travel, genealogy research, and collecting antique furniture. Her love of music was profound. As a member of Christ Episcopal Church Rockville for over 70 years she sang in the church choir and was a proud member of the National Philharmonic Choir, performing at Strathmore Hall. Her kindness, sense of humor, and unwavering optimism touched everyone she met. She was known for her determination and her favorite saying, “Poor as church mice,” which she delivered with a twinkle in her eye.
Janice is survived by her devoted son, John Anthony Schiavone; her daughter-in-law, Susan Coppa Schiavone (Michael); her granddaughters Kristen Elise Roberts (Edward), Erin Amanda Wilby (Ryan), and Sarah Jane Schiavone; and her great-granddaughters Emma Roberts (9), Lily Roberts (7), and Ava Wilby (2). She also leaves behind many cousins and extended family members who will miss her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Michael Anthony Schiavone, who passed in 1991, and her eldest son, Michael Lane Schiavone, who passed in 2024.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church 107 South Washington Street in Rockville, Maryland on November 1, 2025 at 2:00 pm. Family and friends are invited and encouraged to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a local animal shelter, honoring Janice’s lifelong compassion and love for all living things. Jan was an animal lover who had a number of cats and dogs throughout her life. Also, donations can be made to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Janice’s legacy of love, laughter, and resilience will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
