James A. Lewis, 77, of South Hadley, MA passed away on October 21, 2025 after a prolonged illness. He was born June 22, 1948 to the late Raymond and Elizabeth (Low) Lewis of Springfield. He attended Springfield Technical High School and was a graduate of Holyoke Community College. James proudly served his country as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps from 1967-1974. He retired from the USPS bulk mail center in Springfield, MA with over 30 years of service. He spent many years playing organized hockey, softball, basketball and was a very skilled golfer who loved spending his days at Ledges Golf Club playing with anyone who enjoyed listening to his ever present music. Painting and photography were two of his greatest passions that he shared with his grandchildren. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, camping and building his own canoes. He was a founding member of the Sacagawea Canoe Club and organized trips all around the United States.

 

He leaves behind his loving wife of 57 years, Patricia (Carrington) Lewis of South Hadley; his two loving children, James Lewis and his wife, Carol, of South Hadley, and Katie Guiel and her husband, Allen, of Williamsburg; his six cherished grandchildren, Zachary Lewis, Lauren Copeland, Sarah Guiel, Cecelia Rae Lewis, Julie Guiel and Dan Guiel; his three brothers, Raymond Lewis and wife, Linda, of Southwick, Peter Lewis and wife, Linda, of Springfield, and Gary Lewis of Pittsfield; his two sisters, Betty Ann DelNegro of Southwick, and Peggy Campbell and her husband, Joseph, of Southwick; his sister-in-law, Kathy Carrington of Maryland and many nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family members and friends. In addition, he is predeceased by his brother-in-law, Richard Carrington of Maryland.

 

His family will receive friends at Beers & Story Funeral Home, 646 Newton Street, South Hadley, MA on Nov 1 from 2pm-4:30 pm with a prayer service to begin at 4:30 pm. His burial will be private and held at a later date at the convenience of the family. His family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in his memory to Dementia Society of America, https://www.dementiasociety.org/donate
